Radio Data System (RDS) is a communications protocol standard for embedding small amounts of digital information in conventional FM radio broadcasts. RDS standardizes several types of information transmitted, including time, station identification, and program information.
BS IEC 62106‑1 is the first part of the BS IEC 62106 multi-series on RDS. BS IEC 62106‑1 defines the basic layer of the RDS intended for application to VHF/FM sound broadcasts in the range 64,0 MHz to 108,0 MHz, which can carry either stereophonic (pilot-tone system) or monophonic programmes (as stated in ITU-R recommendation BS.450-3 and ITU-R Recommendation BS-643-3).

Radio technology is constantly evolving. FM radio with RDS is an analogue-digital hybrid system, which is still a valid data transmission technology and only the applications need adaptation. Now the time has come to solve the only disadvantage, the lack of sufficient data capacity. With RDS2, the need to increase the data capacity can be fulfilled.
BS IEC 62106‑1 discusses modulation characteristics of the data channels, baseband coding, transmission options on data-streams 1, 2, and 3, offset words to be used for group and block synchronization, theory and implementation of the modified shortened cyclic code, and implementation of group and block synchronization using the modified shortened cyclic code. Using BS IEC 62106‑1 guidelines you would be able to address the issue of data capacity, which lets your customers have better radio reception.
BS IEC 62106‑1:2018 supersedes IEC 62106:2015, which is withdrawn. BS IEC 62106‑1:2018 includes a technical change with respect to IEC 62106:2015, which is: Provision has been made to carry RDS on multiple data streams (RDS2).
