What is BS EN 442-1- Technical specifications for radiators and convectors about?

BS EN 442 is a European Standard that discusses radiators and convectors. The aim of the BS EN 442 series is to ensure adequate performance of central heating systems, such that they are safe and effective for use.

BS EN 442-1 is the first part of the series that defines the technical specifications and requirements of radiators and convectors to be installed in heating systems in buildings including assessment and verification of constancy of performance.

BS EN 442-1 deals with radiators and convectors installed in a permanent manner in construction works, fed with water or steam at temperatures below 120 °C, supplied by a remote energy source.

BS EN 442-1 also defines the additional common data that the manufacturer shall provide with the product in order to ensure the correct application of the products.

Note: BS EN 442-1 does not apply to independent heating appliances.

Who is BS EN 442-1- Technical specifications for radiators and convectors for?

BS EN 442-1 on radiators and convectors is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of radiators and convectors
  • Product design engineers
  • Quality control and testing laboratories
  • Building management/owners
  • Installers of central heating systems

Why should you use BS EN 442-1- Technical specifications for radiators and convectors?

Radiators and convectors are a type of central heating system or ‘heat exchangers’ that transfer thermal energy from one medium to another for the purpose of space heating. However, when it comes to ensuring that they offer adequate heating capacity, the design, materials and dimensions of the product play an important role.

In this regard, BS EN 442-1 provides best industry guidance on technical specifications and requirements for radiators and convectors, such that the required heat output is achieved.

BS EN 442-1 covers material and product characteristics, testing and assessment methods and guidance on assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP).

As a result, BS EN 442-1 can demonstrate the performance, durability and reliability of radiators and convectors, thus ensuring your products are fit for purpose. Compliance with BS EN 442-1 can ultimately contribute to increased and efficient heat transfer and reduced material costs.

What has changed since the last update?

BS EN 442-1:2014 supersedes EN 442-1:1995 and EN 442-3:2003. The significant changes that have been made in this new edition of BS EN 442-1:2014 are:

  • The standard has been revised to be in line with EU Regulation N° 305/2011
  • Tubular radiators, finned tube convectors and skirting convectors have been included
  • The declaration of the standard low temperature thermal output at ΔT 30 K has been added
