BS IEC 61584 is an International Electrotechnical Commission standard on radiation protection instrumentation that discusses the requirements for installed, portable, or transportable assemblies to ensure protection against radiation hazards.
BS IEC 61584 is applicable to installed, portable or transportable assemblies intended to measure
The assemblies considered in BS IEC 61584 comprise at least:
BS IEC 61584 is applicable to measuring assemblies designed for special applications: e.g., high air kerma rate measurements and direction of the plume following a nuclear accident or, when mounted on a vehicle, to guide it towards the X or gamma sources and to bring it closer to the intervention place.
National regulation or practice may require the measurement of other quantities than air kerma rate (e.g., ambient dose equivalent rate, other dose rate or exposure rate). BS IEC 61584 may be applied to performance characteristics of equipment to measure any such quantity. For example, the numerical values given for the radiation characteristics apply to any case but the conventionally true values would be expressed in the appropriate quantity.
Note1: BS IEC 61584 does not apply to thermoluminescence dosimetry systems or other passive integrating devices.
Note2: BS IEC 61584 does not provide specifications for measurements of beta radiation and neutrons.
Note3: BS IEC 61584 is not applicable to the operating characteristics of indicating or recording equipment as such (e.g., indicating meters, recorders, alarms etc.). The characteristics of such equipment should be in conformity with the general requirements appropriate to them.
BS IEC 61584 on the requirements for installed, portable or transportable assemblies is useful for:
Portable direction and air kerma rate meter assembly is designed to be easily carried and intended to measure the direction and the air kerma rate, at various places.
Installed direction and air kerma rate meter assembly are normally fixed in position. It may be equipped with means of recording and with remote read-out capabilities.
Transportable direction and air kerma rate meters are normally installed in a vehicle. Such equipment may be used for example to guide the vehicle closer to the X or gamma source.
BS IEC 61584 provides you with design requirements, general characteristics, general test procedures, electrical, safety and environmental characteristics, and the identification certificate for assemblies, etc.
The requirements and test procedures provided by BS IEC 61584 assist you in improving the performance and quality of installed, portable or transportable assemblies and ensure protection against severe health issues due to radiation.
With obedience and compliance to BS IEC 61584, you can enhance installed, portable or transportable assemblies’ effectiveness and efficacy and manufacture a standardized high-quality product.
