What is BS EN 287-1:2004?

BS EN 287-1:2004 defines the qualification test of welders for the fusion welding of steels. Sharing a set of technical rules for a systematic qualification test of the welder, this standard ensures these qualifications are uniformly accepted – regardless of the type of product, location and examiner or examining body. BS EN 287-1 places special emphasis on the welders’ ability to manually manipulate the electrode, welding torch or welding blowpipe to produce a weld of acceptable quality.

How does it work?

BS EN 287-1:2004 sets out the essential variables and range of qualifications. This includes various welding processes, product type, type of weld, material groups and welding positions. The standard also takes an in-depth look at examinations and approval testing, covering testing conditions, test methods and test specimens. It concludes by explaining the period of validity, certificates and designation.

Who should buy it?

  • Examiners and examining bodies
  • Welders
  • Companies employing welders
  • Quality assessors
