BS 8551:2015 - TC

Provision and management of temporary water supplies and distribution networks (not including provisions for statutory emergencies). Code of practice

Current

Published:

What is this standard about?

BS 8551 gives recommendations for providing and managing temporary water supplies and distribution networks to ensure the delivery of wholesome water.

It is aimed at scenarios where a permanent water supply is insufficient or simply doesn’t exist, for example at building sites or at concerts, where a temporary supply must be brought in. This raises the risk of contamination.

Who is this standard for?

  • Event and venue organizers
  • Facilities management professionals
  • Construction site managers
  • Water contractors

Why should you use this standard?

Collecting water from a potable water supply point and delivering a temporary supply is not a complex procedure, but processes are required to protect against microbiological and chemical contamination. BS 8551 outlines the procedures necessary to ensure that water provided is safe and clean, including guidance on how to gauge wholesome supply, connect to permanent distribution pipe work, maintain and clean storage vessels and ensure the quality of bottled water stocks.

Although the standard is aimed at cases where the need for a temporary supply has been anticipated, its principles also apply to contingency arrangements and emergencies.

What’s changed since the last update?

The standard has been substantially revised to improve clarity and tighten up the safety recommendations. A risk-assessment approach is advised throughout, to ensure compatibility with the Drinking Water Inspectorate’s risk assessment tool.

The revised standard:

  • Gives guidance on water supply hygiene and management practices
  • Focuses on where the water comes from and what it will be used for
  • Emphasizes the importance of gathering the right team to assess hazards
