BS EN 50527-2-1 is a European standard on the procedure for the assessment of the exposure to electromagnetic fields of workers that discusses the specific assessment for workers with cardiac pacemakers to ensure protection against radiation hazards.
BS EN 50527-2-1 is the first subpart of the second part of a multi-part series that provides the procedure for the specific assessment required in EN 50527-1:2016, Annex A, for workers with implanted pacemakers.
BS EN 50527-2-1 offers different approaches for doing the risk assessment. The most suitable one will be used. If the worker has other Active Implantable Medical Devices (AIMDs) implanted additionally, they need to be assessed separately.
The purpose of the specific assessment under BS EN 50527-2-1 is to determine the risk for workers with implanted pacemakers arising from exposure to electromagnetic fields at the workplace. The assessment includes the likelihood of clinically significant effects and takes account of both transient and long-term exposure within specific areas of the workplace.
The frequency range to be observed is from 0 Hz to 3 GHz. Above 3 GHz no interference with the pacemaker occurs when the exposure limits are not exceeded.
Note: BS EN 50527-2-1 does not address risks from contact currents.
BS EN 50527-2-1 on assessment for workers with cardiac pacemakers is useful for:
An electromagnetic field (EMF) is an area of moving electrical charges. Some EMFs, especially those involving ionizing radiation, can be harmful. For most people, exposure to EMFs occurs daily, as the fields are virtually everywhere
BS EN 50527-2-1 provides you with a description of the assessment process, an overview of the assessment process, equipment considerations, additional investigation process, considerations in choosing a clinical method, and much more.
The procedures provided by BS EN 50527-2-1 assist in the assessment of the exposure to electromagnetic fields of AIMD employees and ensure reduction against severe health issues due to EMF exposure.
With obedience and compliance to BS EN 50527-2-1, you can enhance the efficacy of the cardiac pacemakers and enable protection to AIMD employees from EMF hazards.
