Before painting a surface, you need to ensure its cleanliness. Paint adhesion can be affected by soluble contaminants on the surface. The performance of protective coatings of paint and related products applied to steel is significantly affected by the state of the steel surface immediately prior to painting. Water-soluble contaminants are not visible to the naked eye. If any soluble contaminants remain on the substrate, then the coating will fail prematurely.
ISO 8502‑6 describes a simple, inexpensive field test using flexible cells in the form of adhesive cells designed to be filled with water. The Bresle method described in ISO 8502‑6 will help you to identify the soluble contaminant level on substrates, and ensure that your paint coatings won’t prematurely fail due to excessive moisture content.
BS EN ISO 8502‑6:2020 cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8502-6:2006), which has been technically revised.
