ISO 11126 discusses non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. ISO 11126-8 is the eighth part of ISO 11126 multi-series and discusses olivine abrasives. A naturally occurring magnesium-iron silicate which is a safe alternative to silica sand as an abrasive for cleaning brick and stone olivine can produce a Sa3 finish on steelwork.
ISO 11126-8 specifies requirements for olivine abrasives, as supplied for blast-cleaning processes. The requirements specified in ISO 11126-8 apply to abrasives supplied in the "new" condition only. They do not apply to abrasives either during or after use. Test methods for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives are given in the various parts of ISO 11127.
Note: Although ISO 11126-8 has been developed specifically to meet requirements for the preparation of steelwork, the properties specified will generally be appropriate for use when preparing other material surfaces, or components, using blast-cleaning techniques. These techniques are described in ISO 85042
ISO 11126-8 on specifications for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives (olivine abrasives) is useful for:
Abrasive blast cleaning is the method of surface preparation by abrasive particles forced by either compressed air or water jet. The particles impact the surface at high velocity and produce the effects of cleaning, roughening, and activation.
ISO 11126-8 specifies requirements for olivine abrasives, as supplied for blast-cleaning processes. ISO 11126-8 specifies ranges of particle sizes and values for apparent density, Mohs hardness, moisture content, the conductivity of aqueous extract, and water-soluble chlorides. A clean surface is required for better adhesion of paints as clean surfaces help in the longevity of paints and ISO 11126-8 helps you to keep the surface clean before application of paints and related products of a steel substrate.
