What is BS EN 60076-3 – Power transformers about? 

BS EN 60076 is a series of European standards on power transformers. Power Transformers are devices used for electrical transmission from one circuit to another circuit without changing the frequency. 

BS EN 60076-3 applies to power transformers as defined by and in the scope of IEC 60076-1. It gives details of the applicable dielectric tests and minimum dielectric test levels.

Why should you use BS EN 60076-3 – Power transformers? 

Power Transformers are devices used for electrical transmission from one circuit to another circuit without changing the frequency. They contain an electromagnetic core and a coil wrapper. They are used in AC to DC converter & DC to DC converter for ensuring high frequency and stepping voltage up & down. 

BS EN 60076-3 navigates you through the safety, higher test voltages which are specified by the purchaser for the insulation of the transformers than for the external insulation of other components if any failure happens to non -self-restoring internal insulation. 

BS EN 60076-3 provides guidance for dielectric testing which is a non-destructive method of verifying the adequacy of electrical insulation to withstand transient events.

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN 60076-3:2013+A1:2018 supersedes BS EN 60076‑3:2013, which is withdrawn. It includes: 

• Three categories of transformer are clearly identified together with the relevant test requirements, these are summarized in Table 1 and switching impulse levels are defined for all Um > 72,5kV 
• The procedure for Induced voltage tests with PD has been revised to ensure adequate phase to phase test voltages and The AC withstand test has been redefined (LTAC instead of ACSD) 
• Induced voltage tests are now based on Ur rather than Um and New requirements for impulse waveshape (k factor) have been introduced 
• Tables of test levels have been merged and aligned with IEC 60071-1:2010 and Additional test levels have been introduced for Um > 800kV 
• A new Annex E has been introduced, which sets out the principles used in assigning the tests, test levels and clearances in air
