BS EN ISO 1524:2020

What is ISO 1524 about?  

ISO 1524 discusses paints, varnishes, and printing inks. ISO 1524 specifies a method for determining the fineness of the grind of paints, inks, and related products by use of a suitable gauge graduated in micrometres. ISO 1524 is applicable to all types of liquid paints and related products, except products containing pigments in flake form (e.g., glass flakes, micaceous iron oxides, zinc flakes).

Why should you use ISO 1524?  

Poor colour strength is often blamed on off-spec pigment. Many problems are not due to chemical reactions or poor raw material quality, but rather are due to particle size distribution. 

The fineness of the grind test is commonly used to determine how finely ground the particles of pigment are dispersed in a sample of paint. ISO 1524 provides you with a procedure to determine the fineness of the grind of paints, inks. ISO 1524 will help you evaluate the dispersion of paints and inks.  

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN ISO 1524:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 1524:2013, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 1524:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 1524:2013. These include: 

• The material of the gauges has been changed from hardened steel only to allow also other materials 
• Gauges with three grooves have been added 
• The description of the scraper has been modified 
• A second example of a gauge reading has been added 
• The text has been editorially revised and the normative references have been updated
