What is BS EN 12206-1 about?

BS EN 12206 is the first part of multiple series that discusses standards for paints and varnishes – coatings prepared for aluminium and aluminium alloys. BS EN 122061 focuses on powder coatings prepared from thermosetting coating powder.  BS EN 122061 specifies requirements and the corresponding methods of test relating to the organic coating of aluminium and aluminium alloy extrusions, sheet, and preformed sections for architectural purposes, using coating powders.

BS EN 122061 also describes:

  • The pre-treatment of the substrate prior to the coating process
  • The coating powder
  • The coating process
  • The final product

Note: The procedures described in BS EN 12206-1 are intended to be carried out by suitably trained and/or supervised personnel. The substances and procedures used in this method could be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. Attention is drawn in the text to specific hazards. BS EN 12206 refers only to technical suitability and does not absolve the user from statutory obligations relating to health and safety

Who is BS EN 12206 for?

BS EN 12206 on powder coating for aluminium and aluminium alloys is applicable to:

  • Paint Manufacturers
  • Metal processing plants
  • Metal fabrication workshops
  • Builders
  • Real estate developers
  • Contractors
  • Painters
  • Architects

Why should you use BS EN 12206?

Powder coating gives a fine finish and desired adhesion on aluminium or aluminium alloy sheets. BS EN 122061 gives you the requirements and test methods for organic coating of aluminium and aluminium alloy extrusions, sheets, and preformed sections, prepared through thermosetting coating powders.

Each item – pre-treatment of substrate, coating powder, coating process and the final product - is dealt with separately in this document so that you can comply with quality requirements. For instance, the coating powder section of BS EN 122061 discusses identification, storage, and performance requirements for the powders. Tests made available to you in BS EN 122061 include falling weight test, pressure cooker test, cupping test, and bend test, among others.

Using BS EN 122061 you will be able to get a fine finish on your aluminium sheets and sections, and comply with quality requirements.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 122061:2021 supersedes BS EN 122061:2004, which is withdrawn. Significant changes between BS EN 122061:2021 and BS EN 122061:2004 are as follows:

  • Definition source amended and Methods of pretreatment now includes deluging and Change of terminology to etching
  • Process for non-chromate systems and electrolytic conversion is more defined and Identification of powder is now required
  • Separation of conventional technology and enhanced durability products removed and Cupping test- 2, Falling weight test -2 categories and Bend test – 2 introduced
  • Manufacturer to state length of resistance to weathering test and Minimum film thickness requirement altered
  • Colourimetrically standards added, Natural weathering test requirements altered and Test procedure for film thickness tests removed
