What is ISO 19650-2 - Building information modelling about?

International standard ISO 19650-2 is the second part in the ISO 19650 series on building information modelling (BIM). This part supplies information management requirements in the delivery phase of assets.

The UK National Annex to BS EN ISO 19650-2:2018 Organization of information about construction works — Information management using building information modelling — Part 2: Delivery phase of the assets is part of the UK BIM framework and contains the UK-specific recommendations for information management on projects.

Who is ISO 19650-2 Building information modelling for?

ISO 19650-2 on building information modelling can be adopted by:

  • Those involved in the procurement, design, construction and/or commissioning of built assets
  • Those involved in delivering asset management activities, including operations and maintenance

Why should you use ISO 19650-2Building information modelling?

ISO 19650-2 specifies requirements for information management, in the form of a management process, within the context of the delivery phase of assets and the exchanges of information within it, when using building information modelling.

ISO 19650-2 on building information modelling can be applied to all types of assets and by all types and sizes of organizations, regardless of the chosen procurement strategy.

What’s changed since the last update?

We’ve revised the Annex in close collaboration with users of the document, making seven main changes that clarify and streamline ISO 19650-2. The main changes include:

  • A new table summarizing field codes and their purposes in the information container ID
  • The removal of field code length recommendations
  • The renaming of several fields for greater accuracy and clarity
  • The revision of some standard codes to make lists more succinct
  • The revision of status code lists for the common data environment to simplify them
  • Clarification of how classification can be used
