BSI is aware that the UK industry has benefitted from free downloads of the BIM suite of standards for some time; this has been due to the provision of government sponsorship to enable the faster adoption of BIM standards in the UK. However, ISO standards incur a charge, and to assist companies in their transition to the new ISO standards, BSI will be offering the PD 19650 free with the purchase of either BS EN ISO 19650 part 1, and 2.
ISO 19650-1 is the first part of the ISO 19650 series on building information modelling (BIM). This part outlines the concepts and principles and provides recommendations on how to manage building information.
ISO 19650-1 on building information modelling can be adopted by:
ISO 19650-1 outlines concepts and principles for information management at a stage of maturity described as “building information modelling (BIM) according to ISO 19650”.
It also provides recommendations for a framework to manage information including exchanging, recording, versioning, and organizing for all actors.
ISO 19650-1 on building information modelling applies to the whole life cycle of a built asset, including strategic planning, initial design, engineering, development, documentation and construction, day-to-day operation, maintenance, refurbishment, repair, and end-of-life.
The use of ISO 19650-1 will help remove barriers to collaborative working and competitive tendering across borders and increase opportunities. As well, the production and use of asset and project information models can also reduce risks and costs.
NOTE: The recommendations of this BIM standard should not hamper flexibility. Therefore, the concepts and principles should be adapted to the scale and complexity of the asset or project, to address the cost of implementing this standard.
ISO 19650-1 on building information modelling is based on BS 1192:2007+A2:2016 and PAS 1192-2:2013, which (along with BS EN ISO 19650-2) it replaces.
It is anticipated that if organizations are already using the existing BIM Level 2 BS/PAS suite of standards no changes will be required as there should be no inconsistency with projects using the ISO 19650 documents.
Notwithstanding, to assist the UK construction industry with some necessary process adjustments, BS EN ISO 19650-1 includes a National Foreword explaining terminology and is published alongside PD 19650-0:2019 which supplies transitional guidance.
