ISO 16828 is an international standard that covers the time-of-flight diffraction technique, ensuring dimensional consistency, surface regularity and absence of flaws in industrial welding inspection.
ISO 16828 defines the general principles for the application of the time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) technique for both detection and sizing of discontinuities in low alloyed carbon steel components.
ISO 16828 can also be used for other types of materials, provided the application of the TOFD technique is performed with the necessary consideration of geometry, acoustical properties of the materials, and the sensitivity of the examination.
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, ISO 16828 applies to the following product classes as defined in ISO 16811:
ISO 16828 also addresses the inspection of products of classes 4 and 5 that requires special procedures.
ISO 16828 on the time-of-flight diffraction technique applies to:
Time of flight diffraction is an advanced non-destructive testing technology that is used for the inspection of welds to find irregularities. Time of flight diffraction (TOFD) is a reliable non-destructive testing method for both pre-service and in-service examination of welds.
ISO 16828 provides users guidance on the time-of-flight diffraction technique that enables the detection and sizing of discontinuities. ISO 16828 also provides users with a step-by-step procedure for the method, enabling users to do the method correctly.
ISO 16828 provides users guidance on general requirements, qualification of personnel, equipment setup procedures, interpretation and analysis of data, detection and sizing in complex geometries, and test report, enabling users to effectively perform ultrasonic testing for accurate results.
With obedience and compliance to ISO 16828, users can assess discontinuities in the product to ensure product consistency, performance and longevity.
BS EN ISO 16828:2014 supersedes BS EN 583-6:2008, which is now withdrawn.
