General principles or non-destructive testing and qualification and certification of non-destructive testing (NDT) personnel
BS EN 473:2008 is the standard qualification for personnel who perform industrial non-destructive (NDT) testing in all organisations. NDT refers to a range of testing techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage. BS EN 473:2008 outlines relevant training for NDT teams and provides a certificate of conformity when using approved techniques. These include a range of new and existing NDT methods that are regulated by a European, international or national standard.
BS EN 473:2008 provides employees with guidelines in training towards NDT testing certification that complies with industry approved product standards, regulations, codes and specifications. The standard covers a range of related test methods including acoustic emission, eddy current, leak, magnetic particle, penetrant, radiographic, ultrasonic and visual. It does not cover hydraulic pressure tests or visual tests carried out using unregulated NDT methods. Compliance with BS EN 473:2008 provides proof of NDT expertise.
BS EN 473:2008 replaces the withdrawn BS EN 473:2000 standard. It includes regulatory updates and is aligned with ISO 9712.
