BS EN 10228 is a series of European standards on non-destructive testing of steel forgings that discusses the best procedures and specifications required for performing ultrasonic testing. BS EN 10228-3 is the third part of a series of documents on non-destructive testing of steel forgings. BS EN 10228-3 describes techniques to be used for the manual, pulse-echo, ultrasonic testing of forgings manufactured from ferritic and martensitic steel. Mechanized scanning techniques, such as immersion testing, may be used but should be agreed upon between the purchaser and supplier. BS EN 10228-3 applies to four types of forgings, classified according to their shape and method of production. Types 1, 2, and 3 are essentially simple shapes. Type 4 covers complex shapes.
NOTE: BS EN 10228-3 does not apply to:
Ultrasonic testing of austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steel forgings is the subject of EN 10228-4.
BS EN 10228-3 on non-destructive testing of steel forgings is relevant to:
Ultrasonic testing is a family of non-destructive testing techniques. It utilizes sound waves to detect cracks and defects in parts and materials. It can also be used to determine a material's thickness, such as measuring the wall thickness.
BS EN 10228-3 provides you with the best guidance in performing ultrasonic testing by providing information on test procedure equipment and accessories, routine calibration and checking, surface condition, test sensitivity
As a user of BS EN 10228-3, you can ensure the quality of ferritic or martensitic steel forgings and even can detect very small flaws deep within a part by using the pulse-echo technique. BS EN 10228-3 assists the user in performing ultrasonic testing of ferritic or martensitic steel forgings without any difficulties this helps the user to inspect the highly stressed components and improve his quality of products which helps him to gain customers’ trust and confidence in the product.
With BS EN 10228-3 the operation of systems and plants will thus become more economic and safer as the costs for maintenance and repair are reduced by the reduced amount of tests required on the products.
BS EN 10228-3:2016 supersedes BS EN 10228-3:1998 which is withdrawn.
