BS EN 12371 is a European Standard that covers natural stone testing methods used for both internal and external surfaces of constructions. The main aim of BS EN 12371 is to offer manufacturers best industry practices for demonstrating the effectiveness of natural stones for structures, not only for enhancing aesthetics but also for thermal insulation and protection against extreme weather conditions.
BS EN 12371 specifies a method to assess the effect of freeze/thaw cycles on natural stones (see
EN 12670 for terminology, and EN 12440 for denomination).
BS EN 12371 contains provision for both a shorter technological test (Test A) to assess the effect of freeze/thaw cycles on the relevant performance characteristics and an identification test (Test B).

The frost resistance of natural stone units is determined by a test comprising cycles of freezing in air and thawing in water. Frost resistance is an important parameter for the durability of unbound aggregate and natural stone in a cold environment. It is determined as the change of mean strength or as the number of cycles necessary to initiate cracks or rupture.
In this regard, BS EN 12371 provides the requirements of apparatus, test sampling, test method and procedure on natural stone to evaluate the impact of freeze/thaw cycles.
As a result, complying with BS EN 12059 can help demonstrate the performance and durability of natural stones, thus determining whether or not they are fit for purpose in a specific environment.
