BS EN IEC 61938 discusses multimedia systems with a focus on a guide to the recommended characteristics of analogue interfaces to achieve interoperability (GMT). BS EN IEC 61938 gives guidance on current practice for the characteristics of multimedia analogue interfaces to achieve interoperability between equipment from different manufacturers. Recommendations for interfaces for equipment used in vehicles, and for analogue video interfaces for broadcast and similar equipment, are not given.

BS EN IEC 61938 on analogue interfaces to achieve interoperability of GMT is useful for:
Signal cables shall have the appropriate electrical characteristics to permit the transfer of signals between the parts of a system without unacceptable impairment.
DC power supply voltages and the permissible tolerances are given in BS EN IEC 61938. The equipment should operate over the range of voltages given but may not necessarily meet all of its specifications at the given limits.
The use of untwisted pairs or single conductors with separate return paths is a common source of magnetic and electromagnetic interference at both audio and radio frequencies, especially for loudspeaker wiring, and should be avoided. A description of the methods of avoiding such interference is given in BS EN IEC 61938.
BS EN IEC 61938:2018 supersedes BS EN IEC 61938:2013, which is withdrawn. BS EN IEC 61938:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN IEC 61938:2013. These include:
