What is PAS 191 – Design of multifunctional columns about?

Lampposts are a ubiquitous feature of every urban landscape. With the advent of smart cities, streets and spaces, these columns can additionally be used as supporting structures for a range of other functions, including small cells, EV charging, CCTV, IoT sensors, banners, hanging baskets, festive decorations and street signage LED luminaires.

PAS 191:2023 sets out requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of this type of multifunctional column.

Who is PAS 191 – Design of multifunctional columns for?

  • Specifiers, designers, manufacturers, suppliers and contractors of multifunctional columns
  • Installers of attachments and/or equipment on multifunctional columns
  • Infrastructure owners and managers (e.g. local authorities, highways authorities and mobile network and neutral host operators)

What does PAS 191– Design of multifunctional columns cover?

It specifies design, installation and maintenance requirements for multifunctional columns or columns based on one or more the following core functions:

  • Mast type structures
