This British Standard reproduces verbatim ISO 6196‑1 :1993 and implements it as the UK national standard. It supersedes BS 6054 : Part 1 :1981, which is withdrawn.

This British Standard is published under the direction of the Information and Documentation Standards Policy Committee whose Technical Committee DOT/16 has the responsibility to:

aid enquirers to understand the text;
present to the responsible international committee any enquiries on interpretation, or proposals for change, and keep UK interests informed;
monitor related international and European developments and promulgate them in the UK.

Foreword

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

International Standard ISO 6196‑1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 171, Micrographics and optical memories for document and image recording, storage and use.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 6196‑1:1980), of which it constitutes a technical revision.

Introduction

Micrographics gives rise to numerous international exchanges of both an intellectual and a material nature. These exchanges often become difficult, either because of the great variety of terms used in various fields or languages to express the same concept, or because of the absence or imprecision of the definitions of useful concepts.

To avoid misunderstandings and to facilitate such exchanges it is essential to clarify the concepts, to select terms to be used in various languages or in various countries to express the same concept, and to establish definitions providing satisfactory equivalents for the various terms in different languages.

Section 1 General

1.1 Scope

This part of ISO 6196 is intended to facilitate international communication in micrographics. It presents, in two languages, terms and definitions of selected concepts relevant to the field of information processing and identifies relationships between the entries.

In order to facilitate their translation into other languages, the definitions are drafted so as to avoid, as far as possible, any peculiarity attached to a language.
