ISO 21872 discusses the horizontal method for the determination of Vibrio spp. ISO 21872-1 is an international standard that provides a horizontal method for the detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae in the food chain to ensure it is safe for consumption.
ISO 21872-1 is the first part of a multi-part series that specifies a horizontal method for the detection of enteropathogenic Vibrio spp., which causes human illness in or via the intestinal tract. The species detectable by the methods specified include Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, and Vibrio vulnificus.
ISO 21872-1 applies to the following:
Note1: The method under ISO 21872-1 may not be appropriate in every detail for certain products.
Note2: The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified that V. parahaemolyticus, V. cholerae, and V. vulnificus are the major food-borne Vibrio spp. However, the method in ISO 21872-1 can also be appropriate for the identification of other Vibrio spp. causing illness in humans.
ISO 21872-1 on the detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae is useful for:
Vibrionaceae Vibrios are aquatic microorganisms, some species of which cause serious diseases in humans and other animals. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a gram-negative bacterium that can cause seafood-associated diarrheal illness. It has also been associated with wound infections and septicemia. Cholera, caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, can be life-threatening but is easily prevented and treated.
ISO 21872-1 provides you with primary enrichment in a liquid selective medium, secondary enrichment in a liquid selective medium, isolation, and identification, culture media and reagents, equipment and consumables, sampling, preparation of the test sample, test methods, procedure, and much more.
The methods and procedures provided by ISO 21872-1 assist you in detecting Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae and ensure reducing the effect of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae on humans and animals.
By adopting ISO 21872-1 you can enhance the quality of the food chain and produce a product of higher standard and quality.
