This part of BS 1377 describes in-situ methods of test on soils for civil engineering purposes, i.e. tests made directly on the soil in place as distinct from laboratory tests, described in BS 1377‑2, for which samples first need to be taken. The methods described in this part of BS 1377 have been arranged in groups either according to the purpose of the test or the mode of execution.
NOTE The classification of soils is described in BS 1377‑1:2016. This includes both natural and anthropogenic materials.
These groups are as follows.
Seven methods for the determination of the in-situ density comprising four methods by direct measurement of density and three indirect methods by correlation of other properties of the soil.
An additional method for the determination of in-situ penetration resistance comprising the dynamic cone penetration test.
Four methods for the determination of the vertical deformation and strength characteristics comprising the plate load test, shallow pad maintained load test, in‑situ California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test and in‑situ vane test.
Two methods for the determination of the in-situ corrosivity characteristics.
