ISO 20764 is an International Standard that discusses methods of testing for petroleum and its products. Petroleum and its products are materials derived from crude oil (petroleum) as it is processed in oil refineries. Unlike petrochemicals, which are a collection of well-defined usually pure organic compounds, petroleum products are complex mixtures.
ISO 20764 specifies two procedures for the preparation of test portions from petroleum and related products boiling above 200 °C, which can then be used for the determination of total water content within the range of 3 mg/kg to 1 000 mg/kg. The test portions generated by these procedures are suitable for standard Karl Fischer water-content determinations, such as those described in ISO 6296.
