What is BS EN 772‑22- Freeze/thaw resistance of clay masonry units about? 

BS EN 772‑22 is a multi-part series of European standards which discusses the methods of test for masonry units. BS EN 772‑22 specifies a method for determining the freeze/thaw resistance of clay masonry units in one of two categories F1 or F2.

Why should you use BS EN 772‑22- Freeze/thaw resistance of clay masonry units? 

Clay masonry units are available as either common/face brick or hollow brick. Hollow bricks allow for reinforcing to be added within its cells similar to concrete masonry blocks. 

BS EN 772‑22 provides you with the guidance for freeze/thaw cycling where during the freezing and thawing period the rates of heat transfer and the temperature distributions over the exposed face of the panel is subject to a maximum of 100 freeze/thaw cycle. This guide helps you in the determination of freeze/thaw resistance of clay masonry units. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN 772‑22:2018 supersedes CEN/TS 772-22:2006, which is withdrawn. It includes: 

• Definition for sand grading for mortar has been tightened 
• Rubber joints between units are only permitted for product development and factory production control testing 
• A clause for partial saturation at 80 °C is added and only flush finish joints are permitted 
• Monitoring of temperature is taken from 30 mm from the face not 40 mm and a detailed description of a heat flow meter is provided 
• Classification, as F2 is given if not more than 10% of units exhibit damage of Type 4 or above, rather than no units of type 4 or above and classifications of F1(n) and F2(80°C), are added
