BS 3907 is a British Standard on the testing methods for the analysis of magnesium and magnesium alloys.

A rapid, accurate method for the determination of iron using hydroxylamine hydrochloride, sodium acetate buffer, and 1,10-phenanthroline is described. The ash is taken up with hydrochloric acid (1 + 1) and heated for 5 minutes. Pure aluminium is used as an alloying element in many magnesium-based alloys. In the iron and steel industry, small quantities of magnesium are added to white cast iron to transform graphite into spherical nodules, thereby significantly improving the strength and malleability of the iron.
BS 3907-2 provides you with the principle in which the sample is dissolved in hydrochloric acid and any undissolved residue is filtered off. Hydroxyammonium chloride solution is added and the ferrous 1: 10-phenanthroline colour is developed in the presence of a buffer solution. The optical density of the orange-red solution is measured at about 510 nm. This method is suitable for iron contents between 0.002–0.05 per cent.
