BS EN ISO 12004-1:2020

What is ISO 12004‑1 about ? 

ISO 12004‑1 is the first part of the ISO 12004 series on documents on metallic material. ISO 12004-1 is an international standard on the measurement and application of forming-limit diagrams in the press shop to determine forming limit of a material. 

ISO 12004‑1 specifies a procedure for developing forming-limit diagrams and forming-limit curves for metal sheets and strips of thicknesses from 0.3 mm to 4 mm.

ISO 12004‑1 on limit curves for metal sheets and strips is applicable to: 

• Manufacturers of press shop components like sheets and strips 
• Dealers and importers of metal sheets and strips 

Why should you use ISO 12004‑1 ? 

A forming-limit diagram (FLD) contains measured major/minor strain points on a formed part. Forming-limit curve (FLC) is transition from safe to failed points. They are essential to distinguish between safe and necked or failed, points which helps in assessment of quality of the materials.

What’s changed since the last update ? 

BS EN ISO 12004‑1:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 12004‑1:2008, which is now withdrawn. 

Changes in BS EN ISO 12004‑1:2020 include – 

• Clauses 2 and 3 were added from the previous edition, and the subsequent sections were renumbered 
• The description of when to use this document (ISO 12004‑1) or ISO 12004‑2 was revised in the Introduction 
• Throughout the document the use of engineering strain was clarified 
• Sub clause 6.2 was extended to include what was the subsequent Clause in the previous version 
• The former note was moved to part of clause 7, since it gives permission to use another method
