What is IEC 60601‑2‑41 about?  

Another aspect of medical electrical equipment that is covered in our 60601 series on electrical equipment, is luminaries. IEC 60601‑2‑41 specifies requirements for the safety and performance of surgical luminaires and luminaires for diagnosis. 

Surgical luminaries and luminaries for diagnosis are medical devices and not general lighting equipment. Some of the areas covered in IEC 60601‑2‑41 include distance and illuminance terms, detachable handle attachment and detachment tests, light distribution, testing for ease of motion, central illuminance measurement, measurements for determining light field diameters, illuminance measurement with masks, and temperature range for parts that are touched.  

Note: IEC 60601‑2‑41 does not apply to headlights, endoscopes, laparoscopes and their light sources, luminaires used in dentistry, luminaires for general purposes, luminaires dedicated to therapeutic purposes, luminaires for emergency lighting, or lights connected to surgical instruments.

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑41:2021 supersedes IEC 60601‑2‑41:2009, which has been withdrawn. BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑41:2021 has some significant technical changes with respect to IEC 60601‑2‑41:2009, these includes: 

• Revised the statement of essential performance 
• Added exposure limits, test conditions, calculation methods and safety warnings related to photobiological hazards 
• Removed the terms “minor surgical luminaires” and “major surgical luminaires” 
• Added definitions of maximum illuminance distance and reference distance and allowed manufacturers to measure some performance characteristics at the reference distance that they specify 
• Replaced the region of acceptable chromaticity in (x,y) colour space with a requirement for du,v
