BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 is part 2-46 of the multi-series standard that discusses medical electrical equipment. BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 outlines safety requirements for operating tables, whether having electrical parts, including transporters, used for the transportation of the operating tabletop to or from the base or pedestal of an operating table with the detachable operating tabletop.
BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 provides guidance on establishing basic safety and essential performance requirements for operating tables as defined in 201.3.201.
If operating tables will be used in combination with diagnostic and/or therapeutic devices the relevant requirements of each related standard are also applicable.

BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 does not apply to dental patient chairs, examination chairs, and couches, patient-supporting systems of diagnostic and therapeutic devices, operating table heating blankets, patient transfer equipment, delivery tables, and beds, medical beds, and field tables.

The operating table is intended to use support and positions a patient during surgical
procedures for not more than 24h. The mobile operating table is intended to be relocated from one location to another while supported by its wheels or equivalent means.
