BS EN 62729 focuses on electrical installations in ships. Equipment tested to this BS EN 62729 will demonstrate compliance with the SOLAS regulation.
BS EN 62729 specifies the performance requirements and methods of testing for shipborne equipment for use for long-range identification and tracking (LRIT). Long-range identification and tracking of ships is a requirement of regulation V/19-1 of SOLAS 1974 as amended. BS EN 62729 takes account of the general requirements given in IMO resolution A.694(17) and is associated with IEC 60945.
Note: Shipboard installations are not covered by BS EN 62729 but matters relating to the installation of the shipboard equipment are reproduced in Annex B. The IMO conformance test of shipborne installations is not covered by BS EN 62729 but details are given, for information, in

BS EN 62729 on shipborne equipment is useful for:
The long-range identification and tracking (LRIT) system provides for the global identification and tracking of ships. The LRIT system consists of the shipborne LRIT information transmitting equipment, the communication service provider(s), the application service provider(s), the LRIT data centre(s) including any related vessel monitoring system(s) (VMS), the LRIT data distribution plan and the international LRIT data exchange. Governments are entitled to receive information about ships of their own flag (flag states), of ships which have indicated an intention to enter their ports (port states) and ships located up to 1 000 nautical miles from their coast excluding the territorial seas of other governments (coastal states). Search and rescue services are permitted to obtain LRIT information about ships in their search and rescue region.
BS EN 62729 covers technical and performance requirements that shall be followed by you while manufacturing the shipborne equipment. If the shipborne equipment does not work as per its requirement it will affect the communications for distress, urgency and safety over the transmission of LRIT information. BS EN 62729 will ensure that the shipborne equipment performance is not degraded and will help in communicating efficiently.
