BS EN IEC 61924-2:2021

What is IEC 61924‑2 about?  

Integrated navigation systems (INS) comprise navigational tasks such as route planning, route monitoring, collision avoidance, navigation control data, navigation status and data display and alert management, including the respective sources, data and displays which are integrated into one navigation system and safely navigate the progress of the ship. 

IEC 61924 discusses standards for Integrated navigation systems (INS) of maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems. IEC 61924‑2 focuses on the modular structure for INS. 

IEC 61924‑2 specifies the requirements for the design, manufacture, integration, methods of testing, and required test results for an integrated navigation system (INS) to comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Why should you IEC 61924‑2 use? 

Integrated navigation systems (INS) described in IEC 61924‑2 helps you to enhance the safety of navigation by providing integrated and augmented functions to avoid geographic, traffic, and environmental hazards. The INS supports the safety of navigation by evaluating inputs from several sources, combining them to provide information giving timely alerts of dangerous situations and system failures and degradation of the integrity of this information.  

IEC 61924‑2 provides you with the requirements for the design, manufacture, integration, methods of testing, and required test results for an integrated navigation system (INS) would be capable of providing to ships, and to competent authorities, information from the SAR aircraft, automatically and with the required accuracy and frequency, to facilitate accurate tracking. Transmission of the data shall be with the minimum involvement of personnel. 

IEC 61924‑2 also provides operational and performance requirements related to design, manufacture, integration for an integrated navigation system (INS). INS presents correct, timely, and unambiguous information to the users and provides subsystems and subsequent functions within the INS and other connected equipment with this information. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN IEC 61924‑2:2021 supersedes BS EN 61924‑2:2013.  

BS EN IEC 61924‑2:2021 includes some technical changes concerning BS EN 61924‑2:2013. These include: 

• Addition of a requirement for INS to provide the capability for Maritime Safety Information to comply with requirements of the International Maritime Organization 
• Modification of Clause 8 (Alert management) and associated annexes to align it with IEC 62923-1 concerning bridge management 
• Modifications to Annex D to incorporate newer recommendations of the International Maritime Organization
