PD IEC TS 62600-1:2020

What is PD IEC TS 62600‑1 about? 

PD IEC TS 62600‑1 is the first part of the multi-series European standard that defines the terms relevant to marine energy. For PD IEC TS 62600‑1, sources of the ocean and marine renewable energy are taken to include primarily devices that convert wave, tidal and other water current energy into electrical energy, although other conversion methods, systems and products are included. 

PD IEC TS 62600‑1 is intended to provide uniform terminology to facilitate communication between organizations and individuals in the marine energy industry and those who interact with them. 

Note: Terms relating to the conventional dam and tidal barrage, offshore wind, marine biomass, and salinity gradient energy conversion are not included in the scope of PD IEC TS 62600‑1.

Why should you use PD IEC TS 62600‑1? 

Marine energy includes waves, tidal streams, tidal ranges, ocean thermal, ocean current, run-of-river, salinity, etc., that can be harnessed from oceans. 

IEC TS 626001 defines the terminologies used in maritime energy uses. It is a living document that will evolve as new concepts and symbols are introduced.  

PD IEC TS 62600‑1 is intended for use to establish standard terminologies for marine energy converters, PD IEC TS 62600‑1 helps to standardize terminology across marine energy. Having a common reference point for terminology facilitates communication across the marine energy converters industry. 

IEC TS 626001 provides technical specifications that can be used as a tool for the international marine energy community to help create clarity and understanding. As the wave, tidal, and water current energy industries grew rapidly, it became clear that a document defining the terms used in the sector was required.  

The aim of PD IEC TS 62600‑1 is to present clear and consistent language that will aid the development of programs, projects, and future standards. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

PD IEC TS 62600‑1:2020 supersedes PD IEC TS 62600‑1:2011+A1:2019, 

which is withdrawn. PD IEC TS 62600‑1:2020 includes some technical changes concerning PD IEC TS 62600‑1:2011+A1:2019. These include: 

• The required support cannot be obtained for the publication of an International Standard, despite repeated efforts 
• The subject is still under technical development or where, for any other reason, there is the future but no immediate possibility of an agreement on an International Standard
