What is BS 10025 about?

BS 10025 sets out recommended good practices for you to follow, in the management of your records.

During operations and activities, people and IT systems in an organization produce and accumulate large volumes of data. You need to maintain these records for various reasons - legal and regulatory obligations, or for business needs and objectives. This data could be stored in physical or digital formats. It may be located onsite or on the cloud. Organizing and keeping track of all this information could be a herculean task. BS 10025 provides you with guidelines to stay organized and access relevant data when you need it, using a code of practice.

Note: BS 10025 uses the term ‘record,’ to refer to data, documents, information, documented information or records, or a combination of all these, that an organization produces, receives, and accumulates in the delivery of its operations and activities. This is irrespective of medium or format, type of technology or system on which they are created and captured, when they are created, why they are captured and maintained, or their value to people or to an organization.

Who is BS 10025 for?

BS 10025 on the management of records is applicable to all organizations whatever their size, complexity, or operating environments. The code of practice is intended for anyone who has responsibility for managing an organization’s records – not just professionals or experts in records management and related areas. In particular, the code of practice is written for all those in an organization who have a lead role in the management of records but may not be familiar with principles and good practice.  The code of practice is also for those who support specific areas of the management of records - for example, developers of IT systems being used to capture, process, and store records.
