BS EN 60598-2-20 is an international standard and a part of the BS EN 60598 series that discusses the requirements of lighting chains for luminaires. A luminaire is a complete lighting unit, comprised of a light source (lamp or lamps), together with the parts that distribute the light, position and protect the lamps, and connect the lamps to the power supply.
BS EN 60598-2-20 specifies requirements for lighting chains fitted with series, parallel or a combination of series/parallel connected light sources for use either indoors or outdoors on supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. Lighting chains provided with fixed or detachable attachments e.g., ornamental or decorative, are considered to be covered by BS EN 60598-2-20. For lighting chains fitted with lampholders of the push-in type, the appropriate requirements of BS EN 60598-2-20 apply.
BS EN 60598-2-20 on lighting chains for luminaires applies to:
A lighting chain is a luminaire comprising an assembly of series-connected lamps, parallel-connected lamps or series/parallel-connected lamps and interconnecting insulated conductors.
BS EN 60598-2-20 provides you with the gaskets for the protection of lighting chains. Gaskets are used to provide a specified degree of protection against dust, solid objects and moisture of lighting chains for outdoor use are weather-resistant. Such gaskets remain in place on the chain when the lamp is removed and shall fit tightly round the inserted lamp.
BS EN 60598-2-20 gives you guidance for the protection of lighting chains from electric shock by lamp bridging devices. It protects against electric shock and fire is not impaired when devices for bridging lamp filament in the series-connected chains are functioning.
As a user of BS EN 60598-2-20, you can ensure the quality of lighting chains as the product is exceeded through a quality assurance test.
