IEC 60598-1 is the first in a multi-part series of European standards that specify safety requirements for electrical luminaires or lighting units.
Part 2 consists of around 20 standards that each deal with a specific type of luminaire, while Part 1 – IEC 60598-1 – covers generic requirements and tests that will apply to all luminaires.
IEC 60598-1 on luminaires can be adopted by:
IEC 60598-1 on luminaires is the definitive safety standard for luminaires. It specifies the essential electrical safety and performance requirements for all types of electrical luminaires with requirements for their design, construction, test, and performance.
IEC 60598-1 covers all common types of luminaire and is designed to be used in conjunction with Part 2 standards, each of which tailor the general requirements for use with specific types of luminaire.
IEC 60598-1 has been fully updated to include recent innovations.
The last full edition of this standard was published in 2014 and was last amended in 2016. IEC 60598-1:2021 incorporates over 34 important changes that reflect product development and technology advances made since then. The most significant changes include:
a) Changes to marking requirements
b) New blue light hazard evaluation
c) New requirements for ‘Power over ethernet’ systems
d) New requirements for LED luminaires and luminaires with constant light/constant current control gear
e) New EMF requirement
f) New/changed constructional requirements: fixing of covers, cord anchorages, functional and protective earthing, appliance inlets, IPX9, wall-mounted luminaires, recessed luminaires, fast rotating parts, use of bridging capacitors
New/changed testing procedures: DC electric strength testing, leakage current, gland torque test, tumbling test
