National foreword

This British Standard is the official English langauge version of EN 40‑1:1992. The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted by Technical Committee B/509, Road equipment, to Subcommittee B/509/50, Lighting columns, which has the responsibility to:

aid enquirers to understand the text;
present to the responsible international/European committee any enquiries on the interpretation, or proposals for change, and keep UK interests informed;
monitor related international and European developments and promulgate them in the UK.

A list of organizations represented on this subcommittee can be obtained on request to its secretary.

UK application of EN 40

Information on the UK application of EN 40 can be found in PD 6547:2004, Guidance on the use of BS EN 40‑3‑1 and BS EN 40‑3‑3.

EN 40, Lighting columns consists of the following Parts:

Part 4-3: Design and verification — Verification by testing;
Part 3-3: Design and verification — Verification by calculation;
Part 4: Requirements for reinforced and prestressed concrete lighting columns;
Part 5: Requirements for steel lighting columns;
Part 6: Requirements for aluminium lighting columns;
Part 7: Requirements for fibre reinforced polymer composite lighting columns.

This British Standard was published under the authority of the Standards Board and comes into effect on 28 February 1992

This European Standard was approved by CEN on 9 October 1991. CEN members are bound to comply with the requirements of the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations which stipulate the conditions for giving this European Standard the status of a national standard without any alteration.
