The upkeep and inspection of drainage systems is vital for the health and safety of residents. BS EN 13508-2 discusses the investigation and assessment of drain and sewer systems outside buildings from the perspective of a coding system. EN 13508-2 specifies a coding system which can be used to objectively record the visual information from the inspection.
BS EN 13508-2 is the second part of the multi-series, and is applicable to the investigation and assessment of drain and sewer systems outside buildings.
BS EN 13508-2 is applicable to drain and sewer systems, which operate essentially under gravity, from the point where the wastewater leaves a building or roof drainage system, or enters a road gully, to the point where it is discharged into a treatment works or receiving water.
Note: Drains and sewers below buildings are included provided that they do not form part of the drainage system of the building.
Note: BS EN 13508-2 does not generally specify requirements for carrying out inspections.
BS EN 13508-2 on the coding system for drain and sewer inspection is useful for:
The coding system for drains and sewers comprises a series of codes that are used to describe the defects and features found in the drain or sewer.
BS EN 13508-2 specifies a coding system for the description of the internal condition of drains, sewers, manholes and inspection chambers identified through visual inspection. Where appropriate, BS EN 13508-2 can also be used for pressure and vacuum systems in accordance with the requirements of the employing authority. Visual inspection of drain and sewer systems is carried out as part of the investigation in order to undertake the assessment.
BS EN 13508-2 provides guidance on methods, the use of the coding system, national equivalent coding systems, information to be supplied by the employing authority, and requirements for visual inspection of drain and sewer systems.
BS EN 13508-2 enables you to be organized and systematic in these activities by guiding you with procedures to be followed in order to conduct the visual inspection process in an efficient manner. A uniform standard coding system complying with BS EN 13508-2 ensures that results from visual inspections can be compared.
