BS IEC 60050-651 is an international standard that discusses the live working of international electrotechnical vocabulary. The International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV) serves to promote the global unification of terminology in the field of electrotechnology, electronics and telecommunications. 

BS IEC 60050-651 defines terms specifically relevant to live working. It has the status of a horizontal standard by IEC Guide 108. The aim of BS IEC 60050-651 is to provide precise, brief and correct definitions of internationally accepted concepts in the field of live working, and to name the terms by which these defined concepts shall be known.

Live working is an activity in which a worker makes contact with energized parts or encroaches inside the live working zone with either part of his or her body or with tools, devices or equipment. 

BS IEC 60050-651 provides you with the live working zone in which a space around energized parts where reduction of electrical risk is managed by restricting access to skilled persons only, by maintaining the appropriate air distances to parts at a different electric potential and by using tools for live working. 

BS IEC 60050-651 provides you guidance on the Insulating glove, working on a live working carried out by a method where the worker is in direct contact with an energized part and is electrically protected by electrical insulating gloves. This helps you in the maintenance and the protection of the electrical components. 

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS IEC 60050-651:2014 supersedes BS IEC 60050-651:1999, which is withdrawn. It includes: 

• Changes have been made to the existing terminological entries 
• New sections 21 to 26 replace the previous sections. They are more compact as they contain only general terms 
• Section 26 of this part of IEC 60050 provides additional terms of interest in the field of electrical work. Whilst are not specifically associated to live working they do not appear in any other IEV parts and were considered useful.
