1 Scope
This British Standard specifies requirements for the design, manufacture and installation
of interior or exterior signs. It is applicable to illuminated and non-illuminated, fixed or portable signs, and to advertising or decorative devices using the same techniques, including digital
displays. It is applicable to interior or exterior, permanent, illuminated or non-illuminated sign elements.
This standard does not cover luminaires, road traffic signs, safety signs or fire safety signs, trackside railway signs or airside airport signs.
NOTE Other standards are available for road traffic signs (e.g. BS 8442 and the BS EN 12899 series) and safety signs, including fire safety signs (e.g. the BS 5499 series).
