BS 8243 is the British standard on electronic security systems which includes outlining design objectives for intruder alarm systems and provides an effective confirmation facility.
BS 8243 gives recommendations for the design, installation, and configuration of intrusion and hold-up alarm systems (I&HASs) that incorporate alarm confirmation technology, where such I&HASs have signalling systems that signal to an alarm receiving centre (ARC) and require a police response.
Note: These alarm confirmations may be used as required in the ACPO/ACPOS Security Systems policies [1] [2].
BS 8243 on I&HAS is relevant to:
False alarms are not only inconvenient but expensive to manage, this is why the process of installing or servicing them correctly is so important. When properly implemented, alarms are an effective deterrent for burglars, act as useful warnings and limit damage to premises.
In this regard, BS 8243 offers recommendations on the installation, maintenance and management of intruder and hold-up alarm systems. The guidance seeks to:
BS 8243 also provides guidance on minimizing the incidence of false alarms so you can ensure effective alarm systems management.
BS 8243:2010+A1:2014 supersedes BS 8243:2010, which is withdrawn. BS 8243:2010 has introduced the following principal changes:
