What is BS EN 14504- Floating landing stages and floating bridges about?   

BS EN 14504 is a European standard that discusses floating establishments for inland navigation vessels.  

BS EN 14504 specifies safety requirements for floating landing stages and floating bridges for passenger transport and their equipment.  

The main objective of BS EN 14504 is to ensure safe and reliable floating establishments for loading and unloading of people along with efficient berthing and mooring of vessels for passenger travel. 

Note: Requirements for facilities for supply and waste disposals for vessels using these floating landing stages are not covered by BS EN 14504. 

Note: BS EN 14504 is not applicable to: 

• Floating landing stages for motor vehicle traffic 
• Floating landing stages for recreational craft and inland navigation craft that are not vessels, e.g., floating equipment 
• More severe requirements for floating landing stages used for the transshipment of dangerous goods 
• Any gangway required between the vessel and floating landing stage 
• Specialized floating structures that are not used for passenger traffic or the berthing of vessels.

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 14504:2019 supersedes BS EN 14504:2016, which is withdrawn. BS EN 14504:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 14504:2016. These include:

• Requirements on railings clarified (5.1), climbing equipment added (5.2.2), storage spaces clarified (5.6), marking (Clause 8) updated according to the changes in 5.2.2 and 5.6, Manufacturer's mark (8.4) clarified 
• Load combinations clarified (A.2) 
• Requirements on live load explained in more detail (A.6), hydrodynamic actions are explained in more detail (A.7) 
• Mooring line force clarified for the case that the vessel is moored to the shore (A.9) 
• Calculation of wind load clarified (A.11)
