DD ENV 41502 is intended to be used with and identified within other functional standards that specify strings of coded graphic characters forming the information received from or transmitted to the Teletex service, or for use in private information processing systems using Teletex technology.

The concept and structure of Functional Standards for Information Systems Interconnection are laid down in the CEN/CENELEC/ETSI Memorandum M-IT-01. The purpose of a Functional Standard is to recommend when and how certain information technology standards should be used. DD ENV 41502 specifies the character repertoire defined as S/15 in the CEN/CENELEC/ETSI Memorandum M-IT-02 and an additional Greek repertoire.
Repertoire Option A as specified in DD ENV 41502 is intended to be used for information to be received from or transmitted to the Teletex Service, comprising Latin alphanumeric and special graphic characters.
Repertoire Option B as specified in DD ENV 41502 is intended to be used in private information processing systems using teletex technology. It comprises Latin alphanumeric and special graphic characters.
Either of the repertoires Option A or Option B can be combined with a supplementary repertoire of Greek alphabetic characters. Repertoire Option C comprises a Latin and Greek repertoire to be used for information to be received from or transmitted to the Teletex Service, and repertoire Option D the Latin and Greek repertoire to be used in private information processing systems using teletex technology.
