What is BS EN 593 - Metallic butterfly valves about?

BS EN 593 specifies minimum general requirements for butterfly valves having metallic bodies for use with all types of pipe end connections (for example, wafer, lug, flange, butt welding) and used for isolating, regulating or controlling applications.

BS EN 593 applies to metallic butterfly valves used for all industrial applications. BS EN 593 species the PNs, class ranges and size ranges of butterfly valves.

Additional requirements given in the relevant application standards can apply to metallic butterfly valves used for more specific applications (for example, in the water industry, the chemical and petrochemical process industry, and the oil and gas industry).

Who is BS EN 593 - Metallic butterfly valves for?

BS EN 593 on metallic butterfly valves is useful for organizations that design, build and maintain metallic butterfly valves for the following industries:

  • Oil and natural gas
  • Chemical plants
  • Residential uses
  • Manufacturing sectors
  • Petrochemicals
  • Marine industries
  • Industries with gas storage tanks

In addition to manufacturers and suppliers of metallic butterfly valves the following entities will also use BS EN 593:

  • Mechanical engineers
  • Inspection bodies
  • Design engineers
  • Research and development team
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 593 - Metallic butterfly valves

The function of the valve is to control the flow, pressure, velocity and direction of liquids. Fitting a valve correctly increases systems life expectancy and lowers the effects of cavitation. BS EN 593 provides you with design guidelines that you need to adhere to. Following the guidelines given in BS EN 593 helps you to design effective metallic butterfly valves.

BS EN 593 covers all the requirements, dimensions and tolerance specifications related to the strength and thickness calculation of metallic butterfly valves.

BS EN 593 takes into account factors such as inspection and testing activities associated with the verification of metallic butterfly valves for compliance with the standard.

Following the specifications provided in BS EN 593 lets you manufacture and supply high quality metallic butterfly valves to your customers. These customers will be able to safely use the metallic butterfly valves.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 593:2017 supersedes BS EN 593:2009+A1:2011, which is withdrawn. BS EN 593:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 593:2009+A1:2011. These include:

  • The extension of the dimensions to cover PN 2,5 to PN 160, Class 150 to Class 900 and DN 20 to DN 4000
  • The inclusion of single, double, and triple eccentric designs
  • A reference to EN 16668 for valves subject to European legislation on pressure equipment
  • The addition of informative Annex D giving the correspondence between DN and NPS
  • The addition of informative Annex E on valve torque curves at different flow velocities
