BS EN ISO 22109 discusses a gearbox for valves that is an actuator that produces a mechanical advantage through a series of gears resulting in reduced input torque to operate a valve. Gearboxes can be driven via a manual handwheel or electric multiturn actuator.
BS EN ISO 22109 specifies three kinds of operations. Manual, which is a gearbox designed for manual operation only, typically this has only one input, normally by a handwheel. Automated gearbox designed for automated operation, typically this has only one input, normally by an actuator. Manual override gearbox designed for overriding automated operation, typically this has two inputs. The primary input is normally an actuator. The secondary input is normally by a handwheel. The secondary input is normally disengaged when the gearbox is being used in automated mode and is engaged when the manual operation is required, for example, on the loss of power.
