What is BS EN 60335-2-21 - Requirements for storage water heaters about?  

BS EN 60335-2 is a European standard that discusses household and similar electrical appliances. BS EN 60335-2-21 is the 21st part of the multi-series standard that specifies requirements for storage water heaters. 

BS EN 60335-2-21 deals with the safety of electric storage water heaters for households and similar purposes and intended for heating water below boiling temperature, their rated voltage being not more than 250V for single-phase appliances and 480V for other appliances. 

Appliances not intended for normal household use, but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry, and on farms, are within the scope BS EN 60335-2-21. 

Note1: BS EN 60335-2-21 deals with the reasonably foreseeable hazards presented by appliances and machines that are encountered by all persons. However, in general, it does not consider:  

• Persons (including children) whose physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge.
• Children playing with the appliance.

Note2: BS EN 60335-2-21 does not apply to: 

• Appliances for boiling water (IEC60335-2-15).
• Instantaneous water heaters (IEC60335-2-35). 
• Commercial dispensing appliances and vending machines (IEC60335-2-75).
• Appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes.
• Appliances are intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour, or gas).
