Water heaters are required for several purposes in daily life activities. This equipment deals with water, coming in direct contact with electricity. BS EN 60335-2-35 deals with the safety of electric instantaneous water heaters for household and similar purposes and intended for heating water below boiling temperature, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.
BS EN 60335-2-35 with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in the household and similar environments. Appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops and other premises for normal housekeeping purposes are within the scope of BS EN 60335-2-35.
BS EN 60335-2-35 has to be used in conjunction with BS EN 60335-1 which covers general safety requirements that apply to most household electric appliances.

BS EN 60335-2-35 recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances.
BS EN 60335-2-35 also covers abnormal situations that can be expected in practice and takes into account the way in which electromagnetic phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances. BS EN 60335-2-35 modifies or supplements the general requirements of BS EN 60335-1 to make them more specific to instantaneous water heaters.
