BS EN 60335-2-103 is the hundred and third sub-part of the second part of a multi-part series that deals with the safety of electric drives for horizontally and vertically moving gates, doors and windows for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.  

BS EN 60335-2-103 also covers the hazards associated with the movement of the gates, doors, garage doors and windows. 

BS EN 60335-2-103 deals with the reasonably foreseeable hazards presented by drives that are encountered by all persons in and around the installation place.  

Note1: BS EN 60335-2-103 does not take into account: 

• Children playing with the appliance 
• The use of the appliance by very young children 
• The use of the appliance by young children without supervision 

Note2: BS EN 60335-2-103 does not apply to drives 

• For vertically moving garage doors for residential use  
• For rolling shutters, awnings, blinds, and similar equipment  
• For specific purposes, such as fire barrier doors 
• For doors on vehicles 
• For doors on lifts 
• For natural smoke exhaust ventilator not used as windows 

Note3: BS EN 60335-2-103 does not apply to the movement of a pedestrian door where such movement is based solely on stored mechanical energy. 

Note4: BS EN 60335-2-103 does not deal with any specific requirements on noise emitted from these drives as the generated noise is not considered to be a relevant hazard. Thus, the emission sound pressure level LpA is LpA ≤70 dB(A).

BS EN 60335-2-103:2015 supersedes EN 60335-2-103:2003+A11:2009, which is withdrawn. BS EN 60335-2-103:2015 has made some changes compared to the previous edition EN 60335-2-103:2003+A11:2009. These include: 

• Definitions for an automatic drive, horizontally moving pedestrian door and reversible drive added 
• Clarified the marking requirements for reversible drives and horizontal moving pedestrian doors 
• Clarified requirements for the use of a biased-off switch and the mechanical hazard requirements for drives  
• Requirements for the use of pressure-sensitive pads are added 
• Modified the requirements for batteries supplied with automatic opening doors
