BS EN 1397 is an international standard, that includes the guidelines for the best performance of heat exchangers.
BS EN 1397 applies to hydronic fan coil units (FCU) as factory-made single assemblies which provide the functions of cooling and/or heating but do not include the source of cooling or heating.
BS EN 1397 deals with the cooling and heating functions of the FCU considered as an emitter for cooling/heating of a room/space. It applies to all types of fan speed control of a fan coil unit (variable speed, multispeed).
BS EN 1397 provides a method to determine the thermal performance of fan coil units in standard conditions, for the use with hot or chilled water or water mixtures. It also provides the method to determine the airflow rate supplied by the fan coil unit.
Note 1: The test procedures given in BS EN 1397 may additionally be used for determining performance at other conditions.
Note 2: BS EN 1397 does not cover the rating of heating or cooling from direct expansion coils or heating from electric resistance elements.
Note 3: BS EN 1397 does not cover the acoustic performance of fan coil units which is dealt with in EN 16583. It is not the purpose of this document to specify the tests used for production or field testing.
Note 4: BS EN 1397 covers both air-free delivery and air ducted units with a maximum external static pressure due to duct resistance of 120 Pa max. It does not cover any ventilation function of the unit.
BS EN 1397 on hydronic room fan coil units is for:
Hydronic air handlers, also known as hydronic fan coils or hot/chilled water fan coils, are devices that take the heat from hot water and transfer it to a forced-air duct.
BS EN 1397 gives you information about hydronic room fan coil units that are factory-made single assembly used in heat exchangers which can be useful for one or more of the functions of forced circulation of air, like heating, cooling, dehumidification, and filtering of air, in order to provide proper functioning of heat exchangers.
BS EN 1397 gives you guidance about the designation of fan coil units as they can be ducted or non-ducted, airflow rate test that will help you measure the outlet air of ducted units, which helps you in recording accurate data for the airflow rate for the fan coil units.
Likewise, BS EN 1397 also gives you, capacity rating tests, operating tests and helps you state the test report for the hydronic room fan coil units which leads to the production of the best quality, durable and high-efficient heat exchangers.
BS EN 1397:2021 supersedes BS EN 1397:2015, which is withdrawn.
