ISO 24516-4 is the fourth part of guidelines for the management of assets of water supply and wastewater systems.
ISO 24516-4 specifies guidelines for technical aspects, tools, and good practices for the management of assets of wastewater treatment plants, sludge treatment facilities, pumping stations, and retention and detention facilities in the wastewater system to maintain the value of existing assets.
ISO 24516-4 focuses on the assets in wastewater systems typically owned and operated by wastewater utilities that are expected to meet users’ needs and expectations over longer, multi-generational periods. It includes some examples of good practice approaches on the strategic, tactical, and operational levels.
Note 1: For simplicity in reading ISO 24516-4 reference to wastewater treatment plants includes all the asset types described above.
Note 2: For simplicity of interpretation of wastewater system assets, the management of pumping stations and retention and detention facilities in the network, are addressed in ISO 24516-4.
Note 3: Depending on the size and structure of an organization, the utility can decide to what extent it applies the guidance in this document. In any case, the philosophy of ISO 24516-4 remains applicable even to small and medium utilities.
Note 4: ISO 24516-4 includes all different roles/functions for the management of assets within a utility (e.g. asset owner/responsible body, asset manager/operator, service provider/operator).
ISO 24516-4 on the management of water supply and wastewater systems is useful for:
Wastewater utilities are reliant on their assets to deliver their services to the users in their service areas. The assets (e.g., underground pipes, retention and detention tanks, and treatment plants) collectively form the physical infrastructure of the wastewater utilities. They are the consequence of the accumulated capital investments and operational expenditures on maintenance and rehabilitation over many years.
ISO 24516-4 describes the information required to collect and process reliable inventory, condition, operational, and context data about technical assets of wastewater systems. It includes failures and data that could serve as the basis for systematic management of assets and can also contribute data needed for benchmarking purposes.
ISO 24516-4 guides you in defining a strategy for the management of assets regarding the overall performance expected by the owner and other stakeholders. It includes several aspects of operation and maintenance, including asset condition assessment and investment strategies (new assets and rehabilitation).
