Joining the BS EN ISO 14000 series of international environmental standards, BS EN ISO 14083:2023 establishes a common methodology for quantifying and reporting GHG emissions arising from passengers and freight transport. It covers all modes of transport across air, land and water, all means of transport, and is applicable at all stages along the entire transport chain.
Whether you are a multinational organization operating multiple transport modes to deliver transport services across the globe, or a small local operator delivering a simple service to a single user, BS EN ISO 14083 is applicable to all sizes of organizations operating transport chains of passengers and freight. This includes the following industries:

BS EN ISO 14083 provides requirements and guidance for the quantification, assignment, allocation and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for transport chains for passengers and freight.
It specifies how to source data as inputs for the calculation of GHGs, considering that transport operations vary hugely. It covers all modes of transport – land, water and air, irrespective of the means of transport (i.e. vessel, vehicle or pipeline) and includes the operational emissions from transport hubs where they facilitate transfer of freight or passengers from one element of a transport chain to the next.
NOTE 1: BS EN ISO 14083 is for emission calculations and not for carbon balancing. Therefore offsetting is not part of this document.
NOTE 2: It’s not intended that BS EN ISO 14083 is used in isolation. It is aligned with BS ISO 14067 on the carbon footprint of products, the BS ISO 14064 series on GHG quantification and removal, and it contributes to the life cycle assessment according to BS ISO 14040 and BS ISO 14044.
BS EN ISO 14083 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure, Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities, Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production, Goal 13 on climate action, Goal 14 on life below water and Goal 15 on life on land.
