This British Standard reproduces verbatim ISO 7000:2004 and implements it as the UK national standard. It supersedes BS 7324:1990 which is withdrawn.

The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted to Technical Committee PH/8, Graphical symbols and signs, which has the responsibility to:

aid enquirers to understand the text;
present to the responsible international/European committee any enquiries on the interpretation, or proposals for change, and keep the UK interests informed;
monitor related international and European developments and promulgate them in the UK.

A list of organizations represented on this committee can be obtained on request to its secretary.

Foreword

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.

The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

ISO 7000 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 145, Graphical symbols, Subcommittee SC 3, Graphical symbols for use on equipment.

This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 7000:1989), of which it constitutes a revision with the addition of further graphical symbols.

Introduction

A graphical symbol is defined as a visually perceptible figure used to transmit information independently of language. It may be produced by drawing, printing or other means. A great majority of the graphical symbols in ISO 7000 were developed in accordance with the basic principles of ISO 3461‑1 using arrows in accordance with ISO 4196. ISO 3461‑1 and ISO 4196 have been superseded by IEC 80416‑1 and ISO 80416‑2 respectively. New graphical symbols for inclusion in ISO 7000 shall follow the design principles of IEC 80416‑1 and use the arrows of ISO 80416‑2.

This International Standard presents graphical symbols, for use on equipment in different technical fields, in the synopsis given in Clause 2.

The meaning of each graphical symbol may depend upon its orientation in a given reference system and care should be taken to avoid ambiguity (e.g. by rotating or mirroring).

Each graphical symbol may be used in any field of application, provided its meaning is clearly understood.

1 Scope

This International Standard provides a synopsis of those graphical symbols which are placed on equipment or parts of equipment of any kind in order to instruct the person(s) using the equipment as to its operation.
